Samuel Jones Tilden (February 9, 1814 – August 4, 1886) was the 25th Governor of New York and the Democratic candidate for president in the disputed election of 1876. Tilden is the only individual to win an outright majority of the popular vote in a United States presidential election but lose the election. Steam yacht built in 1880 by John Roach and subsequently owned jointly by George S. Scott, George F. Baker, F.W. Pearsall, and H.C. Fahnstock. The Viking was sold to ex-governor of New York Samuel Tilden in 1884, and was eventually purchased by the United States government and used as a dispatch boat during the Spanish-American War in 1898.
